Greetings!

Greetings in the name of the Risen Christ!

In April, St. Mark's begins an Easter series of visiting scholars. Our rector's sabbatical grant from the Lilly Foundation allows us to host four professors to teach and preach to us on Sunday mornings during the season of Easter.

We begin on April 6 with the Rev. Dr. Michael J. Brown of Emory University. Dr. Brown's focus of scholarship is the material culture of Roman Egypt. His research sheds light on the nascent Christian community's relationship with a pluralistic society. He will help us consider our engagement as Christians within the growing diversity of our community.

While Dean is studying the prophet Isaiah's image of the peaceable kingdom on his sabbatical, we welcome the Rev. Dr. H. King Oehmig, to discuss the image of the lion laying down with the lamb and how it might relate to our context. King is founder and Editor- in-Chief of Synthesis Publications, and recently retired vicar of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Trion, GA. King serves as the chaplain for Saint Mark's Cancer Support Group.

St. Mark's is blessed by these opportunities for study. But that's not all. Also in Easter, our own Rev. Dr. Lee Humphreys will offer a Wednesday night class on the Religions of the World. The Stations of the Light, featuring art created by our parishioners is installed in the church and offers a liturgy that celebrates the resurrection of Christ. May you encounter New Life in the midst of these many offerings at St. Mark's this season.

April 6
The Rev. Michael J. Brown, PhD - "Living Together: Christians and Non-Christians in a Pluralistic World"

Michael Joseph Brown holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies and Classics from Vanderbilt University. He also holds a Master of Divinity degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Chicago. In addition, Dr. Brown studied the material culture of Roman Egypt, which serves as a central focus of his scholarship.

Michael Joseph Brown was ordained an Itinerant Deacon in the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1988, and was later ordained an Itinerant Elder in 1990. At present, he is Associate Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at the Candler School of Theology and the Graduate Division of Religion at Emory University.

April 13 and 20
Artists from the Stations of the Light will discuss their artwork. These classes will meet in the church.

April 27
The Rev. H. King Oehmig, D. Min. - "Isaiah's Image of the Peaceable Kingdom"

King is founder and Editor-in-Chief of Synthesis Publications and recently retired vicar of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Trion, GA. He has published noted works and co-authored "Understanding the Sunday Scriptures". King serves as the chaplain for Saint Mark's Cancer Support Group.
Join us for an Artists' Reception on April 6 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Drop in to celebrate our artists. Please invite friends from the community!

St. Mark's is very excited to offer a new prayer tool:
the first St. Mark's Stations of the Light.

Fourteen St. Mark's artists have reflected on the liturgy of the Way of the Light and have created a visual presentation to be placed in the sanctuary during the 50 days of Easter this year.

A work of art has been created for each of the fourteen stations. These will be hung under the stained glass windows and beside the Stations of the Cross. A liturgy will be available for prayer and reflection. This will be a powerful visual Alleluia!! It is a prayer tool that will affirm Easter with its promise of hope, life and light in the Resurrection.

The public is invited. Beginning March 23rd, the hours will be Wednesday evenings from 5:00 p.m.to 7:30 p.m. and Sunday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Please set aside a time to experience this visual prayer during Easter. Walking and praying the Stations of the Cross during Lent will enhance the experience of the Way of the Light.

If you are interested in hosting one of these times during Easter, please contact the church office.

The traveling Cathedral Bookstore will be at St. Mark's on Sunday April 6. There will be books and gifts for sale to warm the Anglican heart. A percentage of the proceeds will support the Stations of the Light.
The Run for John, April 5th

The friends of the Bruner family and St. Joseph's Catholic Church have organized a road race on April 5th in memory of John Bruner. The benefits from the The Run for John will fund scholarships for local runners, volunteers and parish members in or bound for college. There will be a 1 mile run/walk at 8:30 am and a 5K race at 9:00. Race central and start/finish of both races will be at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Haig Mill Road.

There are also sponsorship opportunities. Sponsors wishing to contribute to the scholarship fund can do so and will be listed as donors in the race package brochure and therunforjohn.org.

Meredith Andersen is the contact person at St. Mark's. Please see her for information and forms if you are interested in running or being a sponsor. Her home phone is 278-4327.
Mark your calendars for the upcoming 2nd Sunday Potluck on April 13th. Join your church family after the 11 a.m. service for food and fellowship! Please bring two dishes, or a double portion of your favorite dish to share.

There will be no 2nd Sunday Potluck on Mother's Day, May 11. Take Mom OUT to lunch!
The Middle School and High School Youth will be going on a Mission Trip to Washington, D.C. July 19- 26. To raise funds for this trip (and for next summer's possible Mission Trip to France), we need parishioners to help us out during the following Spring Fundraisers. If you would like to help us as we "WORK TOWARD WASHINGTON" by donating casseroles, items and services for auction, and/or items for our Yard Sale, please contact Wes.

Sunday, April 27 - Casserole Sale
We need the wonderful cooks at St. Mark's to create and donate casseroles for our Casserole Sale in the Courtyard on Sunday, April 27. Parishioners are asked to create the dish in a well-covered disposable pan and bring it by for storage beginning Monday, April 21.

Saturday, May 3 - Silent Auction during Cinco de Mayo Dinner
Parishioners are asked to donate items, services, etc. for a Silent Auction that will be held during the Saturday, May 3 Cinco de Mayo Celebration. The Youth will be donating services such as babysitting and lawn maintenance, and we need parishioners to donate items and/or services that will help us raise funds for our Mission Trip. If you have an item or service that you believe will fetch a handsome price, please consider donating it for our Silent Auction beginning Monday, March 31.

Saturday, May 10 - White Elephant Yard Sale at St. Mark's
While you're doing your Spring Cleaning and/or rummaging through your attic or garage, you may come across several old items (furniture, books, knickknacks, etc.) that you need to dispose of. Rather than take those items to the dump or donating them to the Salvation Army, why not donate them to the Youth for our Saturday, May 10 White Elephant Yard Sale. We'll begin taking and storing items for the Yard Sale on Monday, April 28, so start hunting through your attics and garages and putting things aside during your Spring Cleaning to help raise funds for our Mission Trip.
The Quilting for Others Group recently gave 14 quilts to Cherokee Estates, two to the Crisis Center, and four to the Oakhaven Home for teen moms. We have six ready for the Foster Children Project.

This group continues to meet on Monday mornings in the Parish Hall. Contact Joann Williams for more information.
St. Mark's recently welcomed four new couples through adult confirmation. They are Carey and Jason Ashcraft, Paul and Jessica Crutchfield, Mathew and Tracy Moore, and Jack and Amanda Setters. Each month we'll be introducing you to one of these new additions to our St. Mark's Family. Welcome to St. Mark's!

Paul & Jessica Crutchfield

Jessica was born and raised in Knoxville, TN. After attending the University of Tennessee for her undergraduate and graduate degree in accounting, she moved to Nashville to start work for Ernst & Young. Paul was born in Campbellsville, KY and moved much of his youth. He attended LeHigh University, the Medical College of Pennsylvania, and the University of Pennsylvania's anesthesia residency program for his medical traning. During a respite from work, both were on a tour of Ireland when they met each other.

Jessica and Paul dated 2 years long distance and upon Jessica's urging for a Southern city, Paul began a job at Hamilton Medical Center to practice anesthesia. The couple returned to Ireland to recite their wedding vows and settled into their new lives in Dalton. Jessica is currently a CPA employed part-time at the United Way of Northwest Ga, and teaches aerobics at the Bradley Center for Wellness. Paul still practices anesthesia for Anesthesia Associates of Dalton and enjoys commuting on his motorcycle. The couple are expecting their first baby, a baby girl, due in June.
CARTER HOPE SUPPERS: Gather with a few friends and/or family to prepare and serve a Tuesday evening meal at the Carter Hope Center. The following dates are available: May 6, 13 and 27. The sign-up sheet is located in the church office area. For questions, call Woody Mader at 706.866.6982 or Mary Squires at 706.217.1891.

DEO CLINIC: The DEO Clinic needs these items for clients: travel-size deodorant, travel-size shaving cream, and travel-size toothpaste. (We are happy to receive any size toiletries; our clients find it easier to carry around the smaller versions.) Please place donated items in the DEO bin near the church office. Thank you!

FOOD PANTRY: Remember to keep the food pantry in mind as you shop. Powdered milk, macaroni and cheese, and canned foods (meat, soup, fruit, vegetables, and spaghetti sauce) are always needed.
George and I want to thank our St. Mark's family for all the prayers, visits, and cards that have been so abundant and most welcome. We feel very loved.

Connie and George Woodward

Dear St. Mark's family,
On behalf of my family, I would like to thank you for all of the prayers, wishes, cards, food and love that so many of you offered to us during mom's illness and after her death. We will miss her so much.

Sally, Rick and Tess Little

We want to thank the St. Mark's family for their prayers, visits, calls, cards, and their many comforting words during the years of Ahmet's illness. We are also grateful to Dean, Elizabeth, James, and Cindy Sarratt and her fellow workers for the loving ways they ministered to our family this last week.

Seeking Amateur Radio Operators
What do we have in common: KI4Y, N3ACK, KI4WFM, K4YE, W4PX, WK4CJS, and W4DEO ?

These are just a few of the licensed amateur radio operators (HAMS) in the Diocese of Atlanta. DWIGHT OGIER, the Bishop's appointed representative for disaster coordination, is seeking Episcopalians in the Diocese who have a HAM radio call sign. A future Diocesan emergency net of communications may be established. This net would function as a sub- set of ARES and PACES. Please send CALL SIGN and e-mail address to: dwightogier at bellsouth.net or telephone: 770-886-1408.
While the Rector is on sabbatical, the Rev. Elizabeth Roles, Assistant to the Rector, will be the 'priest-in- charge.' All pastoral needs should go directly to her. Your gracious understanding of the necessity of these arrangements is greatly appreciated. She can be contacted at the church (706.278.8857) or on her cell (706.537.8908).
