Where Paul Went; What Jesus Would Do:
Adult Education this Fall

Beginning Sunday, August 10th (Note: New Time 9:15!), the Rector will begin a series of classes based on his travels and study during the Lilly-funded Sabbatical. The theme of the Sabbatical was "Telling the Sacred Story: Peacemaking among the Children of Abraham." and it included study, travel, writing, and the creation of an Adult Education curriculum based on peacemaking in the world. It also includes a storytelling parish retreat over the weekend of October 17-19 (advertised below).

Class Schedule: beginning August 10th at 9:15:
August 10th: Overview and slide show of "Footsteps of St. Paul" through Athens, Corinth, Epheses, and Rhodes (also St. John Grotto in Patmos)
August 17th: What Paul really said about peace, faith, tolerance, and the Kingdom of God (Rector's text is "Searching for Paul" by Crossan)
August 24th: The Roots of Religious Violence in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam: a study of Genesis 22 (Rector's texts are "Abraham's Curse" by Bruce Chilton and "Religious Violence and the War on Terror" by Jeremy Young.)
*Note: Act I of the Rector's Drama, "The Midrash of Sarah" will be performed as the sermon at both services.
August 31st: Labor Day Weekend, no education classes

Class Schedule beginning Sunday, September 7 at 9:15:
Young Adults class in Library (curriculum TBA)
Rector's class: "Third Way: The Teachings of Jesus on Non-Violence". (Rector's texts include "Naming the Powers," by Walter Wink; "The Prophetic Imagination", by Walter Wink; "The Death of Innocents", by Sister Helen Prejean; "Tokens of Trust," by Rowan Williams) Classes will be held at 9:15 Sunday mornings from September 7 through November 7th. Lee Humphries will lead the class on Sunday, October 19th, during the Parish Storytelling Retreat.

Wednesdays in the Fall: Schedule and subjects TBA
On August 10 at 9:15 a.m., we begin a new year of Sunday School!

Come visit your classroom, meet your teachers, and share breakfast. We will celebrate the new year with games and an inflatable. Here is our line-up:
3 years old - 1st grade - Godly Play
2nd - 5th grade - Fantastic Journey
6th - 8th grade - Middle School
9th grade - Confirmation Class
10th - 12 - High School Class
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17 - SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19
at Amicalola Falls State Park

The deadline for registration is August 15.

Questions? If you did not receive a brochure about the retreat, please call the church office. Several questions have found their way to the Vestry about the retreat, so let us share some additional information.

The Parish Retreat is the final piece of the Rector's Lilly-funded sabbatical. The Lilly Foundation will cover $5,000 of the costs of the retreat, including the cost of the storytelling troupe, Friends of the Groom, who will provide programming for adults, children, and youth. This will also cover the cost for all childcare (for children five and under) and will supplement some of the food costs (the children's meal Saturday night will cost $5 for St. Mark's parishioners, instead of the $15 charged by the State Parks).

If you are interested in transportation to and from the retreat, please contact the church office. Finally, if you are looking for a way to make the weekend more affordable, consider recruiting some roommates to share a cabin. The two-bedroom cabins have four double beds housing up to eight people. Thus, four singles, two couples, or even two families of four could split the $144/night price. The cabins also have working kitchens, so meals could be prepared and shared among many families. Considering that we will be in the beautiful Georgia mountains during peak leaf season, this is a steal.

If you have any other questions about the retreat, do not hesitate to call the church office or Rick Powell, the chairman of the planning committee. This is going to be fun!
The Rector and Vestry are currently forming a search committee for St. Mark's new Organist/Choirmaster. Look for updates in the near future.

Also, plans are now being made for ways to honor James' ministry among us as we bid farewell and Godspeed to the Holyer family. Stay tuned for details.

Join us for 2nd Sunday Potluck - August 10 following the 10:30 service.

DEO CLINIC: Did you know that DEO clinic is experiencing amazing growth in the number of patients being seen in recent months?. In less than a year, DEO, in its new location, is now seeing around 20 patients at every clinic. In each of the last three months, DEO served between 70 and 125 patients and delivered between 175 and 375 services during the 6 to 7 and a half hours we are open monthly. DEO is staffed by Dr. Rod Rodriguez and a second volunteer physician as well as two nurses, a nurse practitioner, a physician's assistant, and 19 hard-working non- medical Board members and volunteers. Thank you for your support of this much needed community Outreach.

Needed supplies include: small or travel sizes of deodorant, shaving cream, foot powder/baby powder, lotion, Q-tips, razors, toothbrushes, and white athletic-type socks. Please place donated items in the DEO bin near the church office. Thank you!

FOOD PANTRY: The food pantry is in need of the following items: canned soup, vegetables, meats (especially chicken), fruit, and nonfat dry milk. Keep the food pantry in mind as you shop, or simply write a check to St. Mark's and note in the memo line "food pantry."

FAMILY PROMISE: The next community-wide Family Promise meeting will be Monday, August 4 at 6:00 p.m. in St. Mark's parish hall. Join us to learn how you can help make this worthwhile ministry which provides hospitality to homeless families a reality in Whitfield County. First-timers are always welcome!
The Diocese of Atlanta will send a medical mission team to the Diocese of Ecuador Central Oct. 18-25, and additional volunteer physicians, physicians' assistants or nurse practitioners are needed. Knowledge of Spanish is not required.

The clinic will be located at Buen Pastor in Quito Sur. Currently participants on the team represent three parishes: All Saints', Warner Robbins; St. Catherine's, Marietta; and St. Matthew's Snellville. Lynn Alexander, pediatric nurse practitioner and wife of Bishop Alexander, will be part of the team.

To inquire about volunteering, contact: Dr. Bruce Perry, iop1973 at bellsouth.net or Gini Peterson, ginireid at bellsouth.net.
The Daughters of the King will meet Wednesday afternoon, August 6th, at 4:30 in the library. Our special guest will be Dr. Lee Humphreys who will speak on The Book of Esther. All women are invited to join us for an interesting and enlightening meeting!
The Quilting for Others ladies have given 12 quilts and gift bags to foster children. Thank you to Jean Tinsley who made the bags and got them to the children. Using scrap material and batting, they made about 10 pads for the Humane Society's Wade Adoption Center. The pads are washable and reuseable and will be used in the animal's cages. They are now collecting quilts for Cherokee Estates Girls Home. June Sparks is coordinating this effort.

Quilting for Others meets each Monday morning in the Parish Hall. Contact Joann Williams for more information.
