Greetings!

From the Rector

Overwhelmed with Thanks!

I'm back from one of the most incredible times of my life, and, well, "overwhelmed" just about sums it up as well as any single word. Overwhelmed with thanks, mostly-not just for the resources of the Lilly Grant, and the sights I saw and the people I've met and the things I studied and wrote about-but thanks for the people back at St. Mark's who kept the parish ship "afloat and headed in the right direction." Which is also to say, all of you who kept taking care of one another, especially during times of sickness, and most especially, times of grief.

There is much to share, on both sides, I'm sure, and there will be many opportunities for me to share more specifically my journey, "Telling the sacred story" as it relates to the three faiths of Abraham (We're working on a "slide show" that can be accessed on our parish web page.) But for now, I look forward to getting back to normal and re-connecting to you all.

It's time for a new St. Mark's pictorial directory! Olan Mills will be taking photographs and producing this year's directory. Photographers will be at the church on the following dates:

Friday, August 15 from 3:00 to 9:30 PM
Saturday, August 16 from 10:00 to 5:00 PM
Friday, September 5 from 3:00 to 9:30 PM
Saturday, September 6 from 10:00 to 5:00 PM

There will be a sign-up sheet at the church for scheduling appointments. Parishioners may also schedule appointments online, through this link. Additionally, we welcome digital submissions of any church-related photographs (VBS, youth activities, Sunday school, quilting, DEO, blessing of the animals, whatever!) for inclusion in the "activities" photo pages.

Every household photographed will receive a free 8x10 photograph and a directory. Please come and be included in the new St Mark's directory!
Instead of 2nd Sunday potlucks in June and July, we're having 2nd Sunday breakfasts prepared by a few of our men. They will be making sausage, egg, and cheese biscuits; juice and coffee will be available as well.

Breakfast will be served on July 13th from about 8:45 to 9:45. If you attend the 8:00 service, plan to stay for breakfast, and if you attend the 10:00 service, come early for a great meal and a chance to mingle with the "8:00ers."

Upcoming Parish Life Events:
August 10 - Second Sunday potluck resumes
August 17th - Low Country boil
DEO CLINIC: Please remember our DEO Clinic clients as you travel this summer; they need travel sizes of toothpaste, deodorant, shaving cream, shampoo, conditioner, and talcum powder, and toothbrushes and white athletic-type socks. Place donated items in the DEO bin near the church office. Thank you!

FOOD PANTRY: The food pantry is in need of the following items: canned soup, meats (especially tuna and chicken), and fruit; spaghetti sauce and noodles; and nonfat dry milk. Keep the food pantry in mind as you shop, or simply write a check to St. Mark's and note in the memo line "food pantry."

FAMILY PROMISE: St. Mark's' newest outreach ministry, Family Promise, will begin this winter with a week of hosting homeless families in our church. The date is not yet set, but volunteers of all ages will be needed to prepare and serve evening meals, visit with guests, play games with the children and help with homework, stay overnight (one man and one woman each night), and assist in a variety of other ways. An orientation session for volunteers will take place in the fall. Be thinking about ways your family can be a part of this ministry!

The next community-wide Family Promise meeting will be Monday, July 7 at 6:00 p.m. in St. Mark's parish hall. Join us to learn about this program which provides shelter, meals, counseling, and hospitality to homeless families. First-timers are always welcome!
From the Vestry:

Soon the second quarter of fiscal 2008 will come to a close. This means it's time once again for us to mail your quarterly pledge statements detailing receipts to pledge. From a cash management perspective, it's our goal to be current on receipts when compared to budget. Our primary source of revenue at Saint Mark's is pledge and plate offerings. Our 2008 budget for pledges is $330,345 and $60,000 for plate. It is necessary to collect 100% of revenue to balance our 2008 budget. For all you do on behalf of Saint Mark's, thank you! Happy 4th of July.

Sincerely,
Bob Haverland, Stewardship and Finance
