A New Assistant Bishop for our Diocese
The Rt. Rev. Keith Whitmore

The leaves are back on the trees. The weather is warming and we are still singing the Alleluias of Eastertide. There is another reason to celebrate: the Diocese of Atlanta has a new assistant bishop. The Rt. Rev. Keith Whitmore comes to us from the Diocese of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Find out more about Bishop Whitmore at The Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta.

May 4
The Rev. Thee Smith, PhD

Thee is a professor at Emory University. His academic and teaching specialties include philosophy of religion, African American religious studies, liberation theology, and religion and violence. Thee's interests include exploring a response to violence that incorporates practices of truth and reconciliation as informed by South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). He is a priest associate at the Cathedral of St. Phillip in Atlanta.

Dr. Smith will also preach at the 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services.

May 11
The Rev. Rebecca Abts Wright, PhD
"Hagar and Ishmael"

Rebecca is a professor of the Old Testament at St. Luke's School of Theology at Sewanee. She holds a B.A. from The American University, an M.Div. from Wesley Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. from Yale University. She is an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church.

Dr. Wright will also preach at the 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services. This is also Baptism Sunday. Three infants will be baptized at the 11 a.m. service.
There will be no 2nd Sunday Potluck on Mother's Day, May 11. Take Mom OUT to lunch!
The Middle School and High School Youth will be going on a Mission Trip to Washington, D.C. in July. To raise funds for this trip (and for next summer's possible Mission Trip to France), we need parishioners to help us out during the following Spring Fundraisers:

Saturday, May 3
Silent Auction during Cinco de Mayo Dinner
Parishioners are asked to donate items, services, etc. for a Silent Auction that will be held during the Saturday, May 3 Cinco de Mayo Celebration. The Youth will be donating services such as babysitting and lawn maintenance, and we need parishioners to donate items and/or services that will help us raise funds for our Mission Trip. If you have an item or service that you believe will fetch a handsome price, please consider donating it for our Silent Auction.

Saturday, May 10
White Elephant Yard Sale at St. Mark's
While you're doing your Spring Cleaning and/or rummaging through your attic or garage, you may come across several old items (furniture, books, knickknacks, etc.) that you need to dispose of. Rather than take those items to the dump or donating them to the Salvation Army, why not donate them to the Youth for our Saturday, May 10 White Elephant Yard Sale.

If you would like to help us as we "WORK TOWARD WASHINGTON" by donating items and services for auction, and/or items for our Yard Sale, please contact Wes

Matthew & Tracy Moore

Tracy was born and raised in Snellville, GA. Tracy attended Furman University where she earned a degree in Education. After graduating from Furman in 2001, Tracy returned to the Atlanta area to complete her Master's degree in Early Childhood Education at Mercer University. Tracy taught school for three years in Atlanta before moving to Dalton in 2004. Her parents, who still live in Snellville, are Ron and Connie Williams.

Matthew, a native Daltonian, graduated from Dalton High School in 1996. He is also a Furman graduate. After receiving a degree in Political Science in 2000, Matthew moved to Macon, GA to attend Law School at Mercer University. Upon completion of Law School in 2003, Matthew returned to Dalton to accept a position as an attorney for Shaw Industries, where he remains today. His parents are Sharon and Jake Harrison.

Tracy and Matthew met while at Furman, and were married in 2004. Tracy taught one more year after moving to Dalton before accepting a position with her mother--in-law, Sharon Harrison, at Surroundings Interior Design Studios.
DEO CLINIC: With the advent of warmer weather, DEO Clinic clients are requesting personal insect repellants (like Off) because ticks are already a problem. Also, your donations of travel-size deodorant, travel-size shaving cream, razors, socks, and underwear are needed. Please place donated items in the DEO bin near the church office. Thank you!

FOOD PANTRY: The food pantry assisted thirteen households (25 adults and 22 children) in April, and with local plant closings and the economic slowdown, we expect to be even busier in coming months. We are low on the following items: canned soup, tuna, chicken, vegetables, and fruit; cereal; and nonfat dry milk. Please keep the food pantry (and those less fortunate) in mind as you shop.

FAMILY PROMISE: The next Family Promise meeting will be Monday, May 5 at 6:00 in St. Mark's parish hall. If you're interested in this program which provides shelter, meals, counseling, and hospitality to homeless families, join us. First-timers are always welcome!
St. Martin's Episcopal Church in East Brainerd will be offering an EFM class in the fall. The class will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 PM until 9:00 PM. There is currently space for 5 more Year 1 students. Please see Elizabeth Roles for registration form and information.
From The Vestry:

"Steady as She Goes" probably best describes where our budget is at the end of the first quarter. Navigating through high seas requires the skills of captain and crew. Here at Saint Marks, our clergy, staff and parishioners are keeping our ship afloat and on course. Collections through March totaled $93,000, representing 95% of what we hoped to collect in the first quarter. This is a fine effort and deserving of recognition to all. Again, on behalf of the Vestry, Thank you for keeping Saint Marks a priority in your life.

Sincerely,
Bob Haverland, Finance and Stewardship
The choirs will take a break for the summer starting at the end of May - a break they very much deserve because they work very hard during the year, adding so much to our worship every Sunday. If you see any choir members or handbell ringers or kids choristers, be sure to tell them how much you appreciate their dedication. Thank you choirs - we already can't wait for you to come back in August!

Those who participated this year were Alice Adams, Peter Andersen, Halle Bagley, Debbie Baker, Beth Blackburn, David Blackburn, Carol Burchfield, Deloris Cunningham, Penelope Dawson, Bryleigh Frazier, Bowen Halverson, Lily Halverson, Amanda Hawkins, Charlie Hawkins, Sydney Holloway, John Hutcheson, Martha Jackson, Jessica Jaconetti, Sarah Jaconetti, Sue Killcreas, Marilyn Lance, Aaron Lopez, David Mainor, Rick Martin, Elisa Martin, Sandy Martin, Jeremy Mauldin, Martha Minor, George Mosley, Hope Mosley, Wright Nelson, Jennifer Phinney, Kate Phinney, Meg Phinney, Alex Reisz, Jim Sneary, Mary Squires, Thierry Urbain, Hebe Wall, Kathy West, Michael Webb, Don Wright, and Barbara Yarbrough.
Our recent trip to the Islamic center in Dalton was definitely not what I expected. Our whole youth group was so welcome, and everyone smiled or shook hands with us, not even acting like we were visitors. I found this very strange, because I had a different perception of the Islamic faith. I knew it was a very peaceful religion, but not what one would call accepting. I knew that they believed in separating men from women, and keeping the women very covered. So I expected to be in a different room than the male part of our group, like the Muslim men and women were. We were not, and this was a surprise!

But there were a few things that were not so welcoming. The imam, or the preacher, was lecturing on the importance of the Islamic faith. Because I am a Christian and I believe that Jesus was the son of God, a lot of the things the imam said were a little unnerving. He said that Jesus was a prophet, like Moses and Mohammed. This was hard to hear considering my whole life I have been taught something different.

But it was very interesting to hear the Islamic side of everything, and to experience how kind and peaceful the members of the church were. I learned a lot from my experience at the Dalton Islamic center.
