Where does our food come from? How do people in poor countries get their drinking water? Have you ever milked a goat? What does it feel like to live meal to meal? What is God calling us to do to make a difference in the lives of the poor?
Moses, the Wilderness, and the Journey of our Lives
With Susan Ewing, LCSW, and the Rev. Dean Taylor
10:00 Parish Hall

The Human journey, from childhood to old age, is marked by both good times and bad-times of joy and elation, and "wilderness" periods of life, when life seems to be one "hard time" after another. How do we get through life's tragedies? Is there insight and inspiration from the Bible, specifically the experience of Moses and the Israelites in the wilderness? What are the lessons that psychotherapy can teach us?

Psychotherapist Susan Ewing and St. Mark's rector Dean Taylor will lead this discussion on both the Biblical and the psychological insights into the "wilderness" times of the human journey, and what hope we have, through one another's help, and through faith in God, in getting to the Promised Land.

On the third new moon after the people of Israel had gone forth out of the land of Egypt, on that day they came into the wilderness of Sinai...And the Lord called to Moses out of the mountain, saying "...You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on Eagles' wings and brought you to myself." Exodus 19:1-4

God Talk
A very informal discussion group for young adults led by Ty Ross and Jim Halverson
10:00 Library

This class will use the new Nooma Video Series. Nooma is the Anglicanized version of the Greek word "pneuma," which means spirit, breath, or wind. Each 12-15 minute video, with titles such as "Rain" or "flames" or "Sunday," settles on some elemental concept or idea that invites reflection and discussion on Biblical or spiritual themes. Check out www.nooma.com .

Review from blogger: There is an edge to these videos which is partly conveyed by the often eerie stripped down background music (the lyrics of which are often not decipherable-think some of the darker stuff by Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, or even the circus music of Eminem's music...) The narrator's background in a punk band comes through in his stripped down or back to basics approach to Christianity, as is evident in these films.
Sunday School for 2007- 2008

Ages 3 years old through 1st Grade
Godly Play
Loosely based on the Montessori method of instruction, the class focuses on Bible and enrichment stories and the opportunity to respond to the stories through play.

2nd Grade through 5th Grade
This class uses workshop cycles. Teachers will rotate through the classroom offering instruction in drama, art, cooking, flower arranging, and story. Themes studied this program year include: The Good Shepherd, Esther, Our Church, Epiphany, Eucharist, and Samuel.

Middle School Youth
This class will use an Episcopal Curriculum that brings the Bible in conversation with questions of good and evil, happiness, truth, and ultimate meaning ... not unlike the questions of today's young people.

High School Youth
The High School Youth will begin the program year by reading and discussing "Marked" a graphic novel of the Book of Mark.

We are in the process of implementing a new porgram to welcome newcomers to St. Mark's! We have a need for "Parish Partners" - members of St. Mark's who would be willing to mentor newcomers for 6 months. As a Parish Partner, your responsibilities would include:
    Calling your assigned newcomer weekely
Sharing one meal per month with your assigned newcomer
Answering questions regarding programs and events at St. Mark's.

If you are interested in becoming a Parish Partner, please contact Amy Parks in the church office at 706.278.8857.

Rev. Dean Taylor and the Rev. Elizabeth Roles show off the beneficiaries of a unique baptism on Aug.19. Two sets of twins were baptized on the same day, the first time this has happened in our 140-year history! The infants (from left) are Charles Phillips Andersen, William Thomas Beckler, Charlotte Ryan Beckler and James Collier Andersen. Parents are Mike & Meredith Andersen and Brian & Jamie Beckler.
Also baptized on Aug. 19 was Sean Peyton Hefner. Pictured around Peyton (5-year-old) are grandmother, Deloris Cunningham and father, Sean Hefner, and Godparents Gaby and Marc Hefner.

Next Parish Baptism will be held on Octiber 7. Contact one of the clergy for more information.
There will be a planning meeting for St. Mark's Living Gift Market on September 16th at noon in the Parish Hall. The Living Gift Market will be held on November 4th - location and details coming soon!
Carter Hope
Carter Hope Suppers on Tuesday nights will be restarting on September 11 -- look for a sign- up sheet in the church office. Consider sharing a meal with the folks at this valuable ministry. Questions? Contact Woody Mader.

Family Promise
St. Mark's has committed to being a host congregation for Family Promise of Whitfield County. This is only the first step in a process that will take several months to become a reality.

Family Promise of Whitfield is an interfaith community network being developed to assist homeless families in times of need. A network of host congregations will provide temporary housing to those families and help them back in securing permanent housing and employment. You can consult www.familypromise.org or call Theirry Urbain at 706.278.6108 for further info.
