Greetings!
Prayer for an election

Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States in the election of officials and representatives, that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(Book of Common Prayer, p. 822)

Vision Sessions for the Youth Group
Wednesdays, October 8, 15, 22.

A group of parents and other interested people will meet for three Wednesdays in October to do long term planning for our youth programs. We'll be asking the question: What will the St. Mark's Youth program look like in three years?

Oct. 8 - discussion of the current program, brainstorming for the future, and identifying needs and expectations of youth and parents.

Oct. 15 - presentation by a lay person from St. Bart's, Atlanta on J2A, the most popular Episcopal model for youth ministry.

Oct. 22 - concluding thoughts/questions, articulating a vision, and next steps.

The group will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the library. All are invited. For more information, contact Elizabeth Roles or Chris Elwell, vestry liaison for youth.
Welcome, Nancy! I am delighted to announce that St. Mark's has hired Nancy Bell to be our new Parish Administrator. Many parishioners may remember Nancy as the assistant office manager/nurse in Dr. Bill Gregory's office, and she is well known at her church, First United Methodist in Dalton, as a dedicated volunteer (She has most recently served on the Family Promise Committee and as co-chair of the Missions Committee). Nancy is a graduate of Emory University, and her husband, Rick, is a computer engineer at Dixie Group. Nancy and Rick have two grown sons, Wesley, who attends Columbia University Law School, and John, a second year resident at the University of Virginia Medical School. Nancy has already begun work in the office at St. Mark's, and her hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30- 12:30. Her work in October will be interrupted by a previously committed Medical Mission trip to Israel. Stop by the office and welcome Nancy to our parish!

Quarterly statements will be mailed at the end of September. This will assist you in budgeting for planned giving in the 4th and final quarter of fiscal 2008. Again, for all you do let me say Thank You! Your vestry knows how important of a role stewardship plays in the financial affairs of the parish. Our operating budget is solely dependent upon pledge and plate revenue to balance the operating expenses of Saint Mark's. We look forward to having a balanced budget in 2008 and achieving this goal again in 2009. More to come as the numbers firm up.

Sincerely,
Bob Haverland,
Stewardship and Finance
St. Mark's Preschool is off to another great start. We are so excited to have Alicia Alderman as a new staff member. Alicia is a parishioner and has many years of experience. She has also been a member of the Advisory Board for many years. We feel very lucky to have her "on board".

Last year, with the support of many, a new playground was built for the children of St. Mark's Preschool and Church. Please take a minute to go down and see the plaque and the sunshine's. Most of them are already on the fence. Daltek is still engraving a few. If you should have a sunshine and you don't see yours - let me know so I can make sure you are on the spreadsheet.

Once again, St. Mark's Preschool was chosen as one of the recipients of monies raised from the Roman Open Golf Tournament. The Roman Open has provided support for us since 1995. They are one of the few fundraisers that gives all the money out locally. We are very lucky to have their support. If you know anyone associated with this golf tournament - please thank them. Also, if you like to play in this tournament you are supporting us!

During pre-planning, the staff was recertified in CPR. It came to our attention that we could not use the defibrillator upstairs on children. After consulting with Mike and Meredith Andersen the decision was made to purchase a defibrillator for downstairs that could be used on adults and children. We were able to use some of the money from the Peter Andersen Fund to make the purchase. It is something that will benefit the Preschool and parishioners. Hopefully we will never have to use it. At this point, we are more worried about our staff needing it than the kids!

We presently have a few openings in our 4-year old class. Since the schools now offer a pre-k class, we sometimes have parents that chose that option. The school program offers a longer day and there is no cost. If you know someone who might be interested, please tell them to give me a call.

Our annual fund-raiser, the Chili Supper is Friday, Oct. 24. Dalton High plays Rome, in Rome that night at 8:00. It would be a great meal to pick up on your way to the game. Tickets and corporate orders will be available soon.

Ellen Andersen,
St. Mark's Preschool Director
Dr. Carol Newsom, Distinguished Professor of Hebrew Bible at Emory University, and a member of the elite international team which is translating the Dead Sea Scrolls, will give a presentation about the scrolls and their importance to Biblical scholars and historians.
